Introduction to kayak clinic

Event description:
Based on the Paddle Canada Introduction to Sea Kayaking (IK) course, this is a shorter session for those that don’t want to commit to a full IK course, or aren’t sure if kayaking is for them and gives students an opportunity to try out kayaking for the first time.  This course offers some of the most basic concepts used in recreational flatwater kayaking but is not designed to be a comprehensive course.  You will be introduced to the basics of kayaking rescue techniques (how to get back in your kayak after a mishap), will learn how to launch a kayak, and will be introduced to kayak strokes. All required equipment is supplied. The course is a total of 4 hours.

Paddle Canada Introduction to Sea Kayaking

In the Introduction to Kayaking course we will provide you with the skills and knowledgeyou need to begin kayaking and set the foundation for many years of efficient, healthy, and safe paddling.Introduction to Kayaking introduces the novice to paddling a kayak in calm sheltered water (such as sheltered portions of prairie lakes).Rescue techniques at this level incorporate the use of a paddling partner and it is essential for all Introduction to Kayaking certified paddlers to travel on the water with others who have been trained in the techniques of assisted rescues.

Paddle Canada Level 1 Sea Kayak

Event description:
The Paddle Canada Level 1 Skills course is ideal for those that have already taken the PC Introduction to Kayaking courseand want to advance their skills, or that have some time in a kayak and want to learn to do things properly and take things to a new level.  This promises to be a great course with enough time to really work on a the skills and introduce participants to a wider world of kayaking.  This course runs a minimum of 12 hours and so will be spread over two days.If the class is listed as full or the regitration has closed, please contact us at coldspringpaddling@gmail.com or 306-370-3462 to be put on the waiting list.

Parent & Kid Classes

Event description:
First introduced in 2012, we will again be offering a short course for young people & their guardians at Erindale Pond (possibly other locations to be added). This course is designed for kids 9 to 15 years old and each kid must have a parent or guardian (grandparent, aunt, etc.) in the course with them (there may be up to 2 kids per adult). This will be a fun 2 hours that will cover some basic aspects of kayaking. Class size is limited to 6. The cost of this session is $30/person which includes kayak rental and all equipment except kid-sized PFDs (see comment below). Thanks to Classic Outdoors for providing the kayaks for this course and enabling us to keep the costs low! Stop in to the Classic Outdoors store at 2225 Speers Ave. in Saskatoon (1-306-667-7770) and see how great they are in person.

Conducted by a Paddle Canada-certified instructor, we will incorporate some paddling games to keep things moving quickly.

Some of the skills we will introduce during this 2 hour session:

  • How to make the kayak go straight
  • How to turn a kayak
  • How to fit a kayak (especially how to fit kids in kayaks)
  • How to fall out of a kayak
  • How to spray your parents/brother/sister/kayak instructor with a kayak pump

You must bring a PFD or life jacket that fits your child well. Although I have adult-sized PFDs to loan, I do not have child-sized PFDs available.

If you would like more information, feel free to contact us.
